Thermal Protective Aid NZ — SOLAS Compliant | Liferaft & Grab Bag | Hypothermia Protection

In a cold water survival situation, hypothermia is the primary killer after immersion. A Thermal Protective Aid (TPA) dramatically reduces heat loss from the body, extending survival time while awaiting rescue — and it is a mandatory component of SOLAS liferaft grab bags and survival packs worldwide.

Lightweight, compact, and designed to be put on without assistance in seconds — even in rough conditions while wearing a lifejacket. International orange for maximum visibility to rescue services. Available ex-stock Auckland.

How it works:
The aluminised polyethylene construction reflects body heat back to the wearer, acting as an emergency insulating layer over existing clothing and lifejackets. Heat-sealed seams prevent cold air and water ingress. Effective across a temperature range of -30°C to +65°C — covering the full range of conditions encountered in NZ and Pacific Island waters.

Specifications:

  • Material: Aluminised polyethylene — heat-reflective insulation layer
  • Seams: Heat-sealed — air and moisture resistant
  • Temperature range: -30°C to +65°C
  • Colour: International orange — high visibility for search and rescue operations
  • Size: One size fits all — fits over a lifejacket or bulky clothing while allowing arm and leg movement
  • Weight: 200g (7oz) — lightweight for grab bag and liferaft storage
  • Packaging: Compact folded pack — fits inside liferaft equipment packs, grab bags, and first aid kits

Compliance:

  • Meets SOLAS Chapter III requirements — mandatory liferaft and survival craft equipment
  • European Union approved — approval number 07347/C0 EC

Key features:

  • Reduces body heat loss and risk of hypothermia in cold water and extreme weather
  • One-size-fits-all — fits over lifejacket or bulky clothing, does not restrict arm or leg movement
  • Can be unpacked and donned without assistance — critical in emergency conditions
  • Compact and lightweight — stores easily in liferafts, grab bags, and first aid kits
  • International orange colour — high visibility to rescue vessels and aircraft

Where is a TPA required?
A Thermal Protective Aid is a mandatory component of:

  • SOLAS liferaft CAT1 offshore grab bags — 2 TPAs required per grab bag regardless of raft size
  • SOLAS survival craft equipment — required under SOLAS Chapter III for commercial vessels
  • Recommended addition to any offshore recreational grab bag, first aid kit, or emergency kit

Suitable for: SOLAS-surveyed commercial vessels, offshore yachts on Pacific Island passages, charter boats, ferries, fishing vessels, and any vessel operating in cold-water or extreme weather conditions in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
