In a daylight rescue situation, a signalling mirror is one of the most powerful tools in your grab bag — more visible at distance than a flare, silent, and completely passive. A signalling mirror can reflect sunlight to a rescue aircraft or vessel up to 16 kilometres away under good conditions, making you visible long before any other handheld distress signal could reach.

How to use it:
Angle the mirror to catch sunlight and direct the reflected beam toward the search aircraft or vessel. The crosshair sighting system on the mirror face allows you to aim the reflection accurately — sweep it back and forth across the target to maximise the chance of detection.

Why carry a signalling mirror?
Distress flares expire, batteries go flat, and EPIRBs require satellite coverage. A signalling mirror has no expiry date, no moving parts, and no maintenance requirement — it works as well on day one as it does ten years later. In daylight conditions it is one of the most visible distress signals available to a survivor at sea, detectable by aircraft at ranges that exceed most other handheld signals.

When to use it:

• When a rescue aircraft or vessel is visible in daylight
• As a complement to flares and EPIRB activation — not a replacement
• From a liferaft, life ring, or any position in the water
